چکیده
The Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM) is a joint initiative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Global Water Partnership (GWP). It promotes the concept of Integrated Flood Management (IFM) as a new approach to flood management. The programme is financially supported by the governments of Japan, Switzerland and Germany. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It coordinates the activities of the meteorological and hydrological services of 189 countries and territories and is the authoritative voice on weather, climate and water. The Global Water Partnership is an international network open to all organizations involved in water resources management. It was created in 1996 to foster Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Note for the reader This publication is part of the " Flood Management Tools Series " being compiled by the Associated Programme on Flood Management. The contained Tool for " Conservation and restoration of rivers and floodplains: Serving multiple objectives in managing floods " is based on available literature, and draws findings from relevant works wherever possible. This Tool addresses the needs of practitioners and allows them to easily access relevant guidance materials. The Tool is considered as a resource guide/material for practitioners and not an academic paper. References used are mostly available on the Internet and hyperlinks are provided in the " References " section. This Tool is a " living document " and will be updated based on sharing of experiences with its readers. The Associated Programme on Flood Management encourages flood managers and related experts engaged in river and floodplain restoration around the globe to participate in the enrichment of the Tool. For this purpose comments and other inputs are cordially invited. Authorship and contributions would be appropriately acknowledged. Please kindly submit your inputs to the following Email address: [email protected] under Subject: " Conservation and restoration of rivers and floodplains ". Acknowledgements This Tool makes use of the works of many organizations and experts, as listed in the references. Acknowledgement is due to Mr Robert McInnes for his competent expertise and for bringing various perspectives into focus under technical guidance of the APFM Technical Support Unit. Gravel-bed river floodplains are the ecological nexus of glaciated mountain landscapes
Gravel-bed river floodplains in mountain landscapes disproportionately concentrate diverse habitats, nutrient cycling, productivity of biota, and species interactions. Although stream ecologists know that river channel and floodplain habitats used by aquatic organisms are maintained by hydrologic regimes that mobilize gravel-bed sediments, terrestrial ecologists have largely been unaware of the...
متن کاملRiver restoration in the UK: Meeting the dual needs of the European Union Water Framework Directive and flood defence?
A major component of river restoration is the recreation of instream physical habitat heterogeneity and re-establishment of the linkage between the in-channel and adjacent floodplain environment. Re-engineering channels to reinstate a more natural form and the restoration of water and sediment transfer can bring multiple benefits particularly if undertaken as part of an environmental strategy f...

Biodiversity in the neotropical region is of enormous importance, specially related to the future exploitation of this natural resource for food production, medical applications and restoration ecology and technology. Knowledge of this biodiversity and its conservation represents an important step from the scientific and applied point of view. Neotropical biodiversity is endangered by human int...
متن کاملForest Development, Wood Jams, and Restoration of Floodplain Rivers in the Puget Lowland, Washington
Historically in Puget Lowland rivers, wood jams were integral to maintaining an anastomosing channel pattern and a dynamic channel–floodplain connection; they also created deep pools. In the late 1800s, wood was removed from most rivers, rivers were isolated from their floodplains, and riparian forests were cut down, limiting wood recruitment. An exception to this history is an 11-km-long reach...
